Bear Wisdom 🐻
by newsletter writer Jenna Duxbury
Winter is almost here. The nights are getting longer, the days are growing colder. Perhaps you are already caught up in the mad sprint to the end of the year, finishing work projects, figuring out your exit plan for Christmas dinner with your Uncle John who voted (again!) for you-know-who. In these final weeks of 2024, you may be wrangling with deep exhaustion and lingering frustration in the aftermath of the election, and looking ahead to the new year with more than a twinge of dread. I feel it, too. Perhaps you are planning to retreat - to set limits on certain relationships that stress you out, to stop with the constant doom-scrolling. To descend into your cave and hibernate for a while. Totally fair.
When I think about hibernation, bears are the first animal that pop into my mind. I sometimes wish during the winter months that I too could turn off my cell phone, hide in my basement, and sleep until spring. But as I started doing more reading on bear hibernation, I’ve come to see it as a more active, almost alchemical process of transformation. All the energy & fat that bears gain during the summer gets used to keep them alive while they sleep. Their heart rate & breathing slows – I’m picturing the bear in a state of deep calm, a yogic savasana. The bear’s body also works to restore any injuries that they may have sustained before hibernation. Sows give birth in their dens, and their cubs remain with them until it’s time to emerge in the spring.
And they're unbearably cute...!
If you are feeling nature’s call to embrace slower rhythms, don’t resist them. Maybe you don’t have the luxury of hiding in your basement for three months. But, perhaps there are some elements of bear wisdom that you can incorporate into your life & artistic rhythms:
Creative Prompts on Hope & Rebuilding:
-
Stock up on the good stuff. Name what nourishes your soul during hard times, and make sure you have some of it in reserve to draw on when the going gets tough (e.g. snacks (of course!), time connecting with friends & loved ones, experiences with art that moves you…what else?).
-
Use your energy wisely. It’s easy to get caught up in the news cycle of despair & trepidation about the future. Set limits on your screen time, and consider disengaging from conversations that aren’t going to lead anywhere.
-
Listen to the wisdom of your body. If you feel tired or stressed, give yourself permission to phone it in just a little bit. Eat proper meals, exercise, drink water, and get the sleep you need so your brain can rest & heal.
-
Make a list of what you are planning or looking forward to in 2025. What projects are gestating in you? What new life will emerge with you in the spring? Are you searching for a new job? Dabbling in a new artistic discipline or technique? Throw some hopeful milestones on the calendar, and keep your dreams in sight.
-
Stay connected with your people. Fun fact! A group of bears is called a “sloth” or a “sleuth.” Who rejoices with you in your triumphs, and grieves with you in your sorrow? Who do you know that is also worried about the future? Identify the bears you wouldn’t mind sharing a cave with during the long winter ahead. Make a plan to check in with them during the holidays.
