Ephemeral Beauty

by newsletter writer Jenna Duxbury

June is my favorite month. It comes as a perennial wave of relief that washes away the stress of the academic year and bubbles up with the promise of a new chapter. Longer days give us more time in the Carolina sunshine and more energy for getting stuff done. Nothing feels permanent in June—the gorgeous flowers that burst into life will only be with us for a short time. June only has four weekends (!); how will we fill that precious time to enjoy it to the fullest? There was a time in my life when realizing that time & beauty were fleeting & subject to decay made me feel as if making an effort to enjoy it was a bit pointless.

But actually, I think the impermanence makes it all the more special and worthy of attention. I have these memories—maybe you have them, too—of going to theme parks as a kid and standing in long lines to ride roller coasters & water slides. On aching feet and tired, wiggly limbs, I remember reading the etchings that thousands of bored park visitors had carved into the handrails & wooden posts lining the paths to the ride gates. B loves T. KC + RP 4EVR. Summer 2007. I always wondered what happened to all those hearts & plus signs. I’d never know what inspired a person to scrawl You are beautiful! or I was here in permanent marker on a bathroom stall above gritty sand & squares of toilet paper.

Is the fact that we are here at all worthy of note? After years of wrestling with this question, I believe the answer is yes. One day, we will all turn to dust & decay. So, the time to bloom is now.

Muse: A Carolina Creatives Juried Art Competition

Come join us in-person this Friday, June 6th from 6pm-9pm at The Artistry Gallery in Greenville, South Carolina for the opening reception of our first-ever juried art competition! We received so many wonderful visual art submissions from creators, and the pieces that were accepted for entry to the competition will be on display at the gallery through June & July.

During the reception, we'll be taking votes for the People's Choice Award, and we'll announce all winners during our awards ceremony at 7:30pm. Refreshments will be available, and artists will have art and other merchandise for sale.

Even if you can’t join us for our opening night reception, you can still enjoy the amazing art and help celebrate and support our visual artists by interacting with their work on our social media throughout the next two months. The gallery will be open intermittently over the two months, so feel free to stop by between June 6th and July 25th. The next reception opening will take place on Greenville's next First Fridays, July 4th, 6pm-9pm.

V.II launches on Saturday, June 7th!

Our second issue of 2025 will be available in digital & print form on Saturday, June 7th! Join us for the launch party on Instagram Live at 10:30am.

Ordering print copies is a great way to support our operations and to get some cool literature you can actually hold in your hands. Pro tip: I always order an extra copy to share with my favorite local coffee shop or microbrewery—it’s a fun conversation starter that helps spread the word about Carolina Muse in my local community.
