The Five Year Plan
by newsletter writer Jenna Duxbury
There’s something special about the number five. Five senses that take in all the information and beauty and pain in the world around us. Famous “5” musical groups include the Jackson 5, Maroon 5, Ben Folds Five, the Five Satins, and many others. That triumphant joy when a five-year-old child thrusts out their hand – “I’m this many!” – and the five points of an apple blossom, or the five points of a star. If you’ve ever kept (or attempted to keep) a five-year-diary, you may have experienced the oddly cyclical reflections and the wonky spirals of growth and decay that sometimes describe our experience of time. How we change and how we remain the same can be a matter of sheer perspective.
This month, we’re taking a moment to celebrate the 5th anniversary of Carolina Muse! 🥳 We are so proud of our publication and all the creators who have shared their work with us over the years. This month, we're sharing an extra-special interview with founder and editor-in-chief, Madison Foster. Keep reading for some creative prompts for this month based on the number 5, and to find out how you can share in the joy of Carolina Muse IRL this fall!
Five Creative Prompts Based on the Number 5:
-
Research the esoteric symbolism of the number 5 throughout history and across cultural systems. Choose an interesting nugget of connection that speaks to you, and perhaps use that as inspiration for a piece.
-
Pick 5 artists or pieces that speak to you and learn something about them. Sometimes going down the rabbit hole to find out what inspired the creation of a particular work can lead to new insights and areas of interest.
-
Neuroscientific studies have explored how engaging multiple senses helps us learn & retain information more effectively. You may have noticed how certain smells or tastes revive memories in ways that images or written words do not. Plan an encounter with art for yourself this season where you will engage all five of your senses at once.
-
Name 5 things that you want to evaluate in a piece you’re working on. For example:
- Theme – What message is this piece trying to convey?
- Emotion – What emotions are present in this work?
- Style – How would I describe my approach to this work, or the genre in which it belongs?
- Why – What inspired me to create this work? Where does it come from?
- Audience – Who is my intended viewer? Who am I trying to connect with?
-
Consider your own five-year plan. What are some concrete steps you could take now to pursue that vision? Maybe you don’t need to wait five years to begin to see your dream come to life!
