The Year in Review

by newsletter writer Jenna Duxbury

As 2025 draws to a close and I reflect on everything that has taken place over the past year at the magazine, there's so much to celebrate. Carolina Muse turned 5 years old! That's a special landmark that not every indie lit magazine gets to reach. We hosted two in-person events this year, including our fifth annual Arts Jam and our first ever juried visual art competition. We published three incredible issues featuring original artwork from creators in the Carolinas and beyond, and we're already looking ahead to an exciting year in 2026. Thank you for reading and for being part of this journey with us!

Holiday reading material

Our final issue of the year is available now in digital format. Read it for free on our website. You can also peruse each previous issue of the magazine (for free!) in our archive. Pro tip for our introverted readers: I (Jenna) like to download an issue onto my iPad over busy holiday breaks and dip into it whenever I need a quiet moment away from the festivities!

Submissions are open now through December 15th!

There's still time to share your work in our final submissions call of the year. The deadline to send us your poetry, short stories, original music compositions, dance pieces, visual artwork, and mixed media is December 15th. Here's some insight into what our editors are looking for in submissions:

Madison Foster, Editor-in-Chief

When reviewing submissions across art forms, I look for pieces that feel authentic and that speak to the range of emotions & experiences that make us human. I like seeing work that utilizes symbols and other creative devices to convey a message and make viewers think deeper.

Lilliana Cameron, Visual Art Editor

I’m looking for artwork from a wide range of mediums, work that feels sincere & unique. I appreciate both technical skills & freedom of expression, and I love art that invites viewers to look deeper.

Aidan Melinson, Stories Editor

I’m looking for pieces that challenge our notions of truth. I also love stories that use their characters to explore our relationships to ourselves, to others, and especially to both people & place.

Amanda Conover, Poetry Editor

I look for poems that utilize poetic devices in a way that is specific & unique. I also look for poems that are more concrete than abstract, have distinct and specific descriptions, and show more than they tell. I love poems that breast the boundaries and leave you feeling enchanted after you’ve finished reading them.

Rush Johnston, Dance Editor

1. Artistry & creativity, specifically pieces that task a risk, genre bend, or explore new themes.
2. Quality footage. While I understand that filming staged work can be challenging, a clear picture goes a long way.
3. Stage performance or dance film! I love to see creative ways of showcasing dance.
4. Solid foundations & researched movement.

Please refer to our submissions page for instructions about submitting your work through Duosuma. We can't wait to see what you create!
